UTICA N.Y. - The SUNY Poly women's basketball team recently participated in fundraising efforts to fight against Type 1 Diabetes. The team raised money and walked for Alex's Angels in the Sweet Steps Walk for a Cure on September 19th at the Masonic Care Community.
The excerpt below is from the flyer asking for donations on Alex's behalf.
Alex is a seven year old boy who was diagnosed with type one diabetes and has been battling it every day of his life. Alex's pancreas does not work. We must check his numbers by pricking his finger for blood about 10 times a day, even when he is sleeping. We measure everything he eats. Insulin dosing is based on blood glucose levels and carbohydrates eaten. Alex adjusted very well to his pump which eliminates the need for at least 10 shots per day.
THIS WAS A BIG STEP. We still worry constantly, blood glucose levels that are too high or too low as it can cause blindness, seizures, organ damage, unconsciousness, and even death.
Researchers have made many advancements like the insulin pump and continuous glucose monitoring devices, which unfortunately Alex is too young for yet, and even an artificial pancreas in the near future. There is no cure for Type 1 Diabetes. Alex's life depends on us and PEOPLE like you who can help raise awareness and money
SUNY Poly thanks these young women for being kind and giving to such a noble cause. We wish the best for Alex and his family and look forward to walking with him again soon!
