Troy, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly women's basketball team suffered a 51-37 loss to the Russell Sage College Gators. Alysa Jackson led the Wildcats in scoring with 10 points, while Sanaa Lee grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. SUNY Poly now stands at 3-18 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SUNY Poly started strong with a three-pointer from Alysa Jackson, but Russell Sage quickly responded with back-to-back threes from Kallie Hopkins to take the lead. Both teams struggled to find their shooting touch throughout the first quarter, but SUNY Poly's Alivia Turk added a basket to keep the Wildcats within reach. Russell Sage finished the quarter strong with a jumper from Angelina Schaefer and a layup from Riley Sitcer to take a 12-7 lead.
In the second quarter, SUNY Poly opened with another three-pointer from Alivia Turk, cutting the deficit to 12-8. However, Russell Sage answered with solid offensive plays, including a jumper from Malena Gereau and a three-pointer to push their lead to 17-10. SUNY Poly battled back with another three from Alysa Jackson to make it 17-13, but Russell Sage continued to capitalize, with Kallie Hopkins scoring a layup and Malena Gereau adding a jumper to extend their lead to 21-16. Despite missed shots from both teams, Russell Sage held a five-point advantage heading into halftime.
The third quarter began with both teams struggling to find their rhythm, marked by turnovers and missed shots. However, Russell Sage's defense was active, including steals from Lauren Sanderson and Malena Gereau that led to easy points. SUNY Poly responded with some solid plays, including a layup by Alivia Turk and a jumper by Alysa Jackson, but they couldn't keep up with Russell Sage's scoring. By the end of the period, Russell Sage had built a 12-point lead at 36-24.
SUNY Poly tried to rally in the fourth quarter, as Hannah Shipley knocked down a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 36-27. Russell Sage quickly answered with a jumper from Riley Sitcer and a layup from Layla Acosta to extend their lead to 40-29. Despite key plays from SUNY Poly, including a layup and free throw from Alana Jackson, it was too little, too late. Russell Sage held off the Wildcats, finishing strong with a 51-37 victory.
