UTICA, NY – SUNYIT senior Susanna Tom (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) was the recipient of the President's Award at the school's academic awards banquet this past Friday. The prestigious honor is presented to a graduating student who has a distinguished academic record, has demonstrated leadership to SUNYIT, the community or the discipline, and exhibits exceptional standards of moral character.
Tom, a four-year member of the SUNYIT women's cross country team, won the award for her well-roundedness as a student-athlete. She was one of top Lady Wildcat runners this season, registering two top-25 finishes and two top-50 finishes before capping off the year with a 22nd place finish at the NEAC Championships. Her efforts earned her the team's Most Valuable Player award at the Wildcats' awards ceremony, where she was also recognized as a member of the "3.0 Club" that included all student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 through three terms of study, as well as one of five inaugural winners of the "Spirit of the Wildcat" award that was given to student-athletes who are invaluable assets to SUNYIT by displaying exemplary leadership skills and strong character through a commitment to academics, athletics, and service to society.
Tom also organized and chaired a fundraiser for the Japan Relief Fund through a bake sale, raffle and donations from other student association organizations and local businesses that helped raised $6,000. She also served as the Student Association Secretary this past year in addition to serving on several college-wide committees such as the College Association and the Administrative Judicial Board.
Tom completed her Bachelor of Science degree in business administration with a minor in human resources management this semester.
