GAME ONE:
In a classic pitcher's duel that saw both teams locked in a scoreless battle through six innings, SUNY Poly finally broke through in the top of the seventh to edge out Brockport, 1-0, in a tightly contested non-conference softball matchup.
The game was a defensive showcase from the start, with both teams trading zeroes on the scoreboard inning after inning. Neither lineup could find a rhythm early, as sharp pitching from Trinity Critelli, who finished with eight strikeouts on just over 100 pitches, kept baserunners to a minimum. SUNY Poly's lineup was held to just two hits through the first four innings, while Brockport managed only a pair of singles in the bottom of the fourth.
Brockport had their best opportunity to score in the sixth inning. With two outs, Teresa Cotty singled and was replaced by pinch runner Jackie DuTot. Aubrey Ennis followed with a double down the left field line, putting runners on second and third. But the Wildcat defense held firm, retiring the side with a fly out to center, leaving the game knotted at zero.
The breakthrough came in the top of the seventh for SUNY Poly. Kelly Powell sparked the rally with a leadoff double to right field. After a strikeout, Ava Faragon delivered a clutch single to move Powell to third and later stole second. With two runners in scoring position, Shelbi Hagues grounded out to second, allowing Powell to cross the plate for the game's only run.
Brockport had one last chance in the bottom half of the inning. Natalie Faas doubled with one out and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by pinch hitter Caitlyn Dailey. However, the SUNY Poly defense came through one final time, inducing a routine groundout to close the door and secure the narrow win.
GAME TWO:
The Wildcats got off to a quiet start, going down in order in the first inning. Brockport, however, wasted no time capitalizing on their opportunities, jumping to a commanding 5-0 lead in the opening frame, aided by timely hitting and a couple of errors by SUNY Poly.
The Wildcats answered back in the second, cutting the lead to 5-1. Joely Welpe singled to get things started, and Alivia Turk's double moved her to third. A walk to Jillian O'Connor loaded the bases, but SUNY Poly couldn't bring any more runs across.
Brockport responded with two more runs in the second, pushing their lead to 7-1. But SUNY Poly came roaring back in the third. A single by Kimberly Birmingham drove in one run, followed by a timely triple from Turk that brought in another to make it a 7-4 game.
After a couple of walks and a single, Birmingham delivered again in the fourth, hitting a three-run single to tie the game at 7-7.
The Golden Eagles quickly regained a 9-7 lead in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to a two-run single by Paige Wentland.
The back-and-forth continued in the top of the fifth when Annabella Mondello ripped a double down the line, scoring Shelbi Hagues and Jillian O'Connor to tie the game at 9-9.
The Wildcats took their first lead of the game in the sixth, when Kelly Powell doubled to right field, scoring Jadyn Childers and giving SUNY Poly a 10-9 advantage.
Brockport struggled to get anything going in the final two innings, as Trinity Critelli retired the side in order, 6-up, 6-down, to close out the game. Critelli's dominant performance on the mound helped seal the victory, as she earned two wins and struck out 14 batters across both games.
