Syracuse, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against SUNY Brockport on Saturday, falling 11–1 in game one and 7–6 in extra innings in game two. The Wildcats now sit at 7-11 on the season.
GAME ONE:
Brockport came out strong in the opener, striking early in the first inning. After loading the bases with a pair of walks and a fielder's choice, the Golden Eagles broke through with a two-run single to take a 2–0 lead.
SUNY Poly looked to respond in the early innings, getting runners on base in the second and third frames, including a double from
Kelly Powell, but were unable to capitalize as Brockport pitching held firm.
The game turned in the fourth inning when Brockport put together a big rally. Using a mix of walks, timely hits, and a SUNY Poly error, the Golden Eagles plated five runs to extend their lead to 7–0.
Brockport maintained control the rest of the way, limiting the Wildcats offensively while adding insurance late. SUNY Poly broke through in the sixth inning when
Ava Faragon launched a solo home run to left center for the team's lone run.
Brockport answered with a four-run seventh inning, highlighted by multiple RBI hits, to push the lead to 11–1. SUNY Poly put two runners on in the bottom of the seventh but could not extend the game as Brockport secured the win.
GAME TWO: SUNY POLY VS. SUNY BROCKPORT
Game two opened as a defensive battle, with both teams working out of early scoring threats through the first three innings.
Brockport broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning, capitalizing on a string of hits and productive outs to score four runs and take a 4–0 lead.
SUNY Poly responded in the bottom half of the inning, getting on the board when
Joely Welpe doubled and later scored on a Brockport error to cut the deficit to 4–1.
After Brockport added a run in the sixth to make it 5–1, the Wildcats mounted their biggest rally of the day. SUNY Poly strung together several hits in the bottom of the sixth, including RBI contributions from
Marissa Jarvis and
Katelyn Adams, before
Ava Faragon delivered the key blow—a three-run double to left center—to give the Wildcats a 6–5 lead.
Brockport answered in the top of the seventh, capitalizing on an error to tie the game at 6–6 and force extra innings.
In the eighth, Brockport regained the lead with a sacrifice fly to go in front 7–6.
SUNY Poly threatened in the bottom half, with
Kelly Powell doubling and advancing to third, but the Wildcats were unable to bring her home as Brockport held on for the 7–6 victory.
