Men's Soccer Records 8th Shutout in Crucial Conference Win at Wells; Faye Ranked 7th Nationally in Save Percentage

Box Score

AURORA, N.Y. – For the fourth-straight game the Wildcats shut out their opponent on Saturday, defeating the Wells Express 2-0.

At 10-1-1 the Wildcats are undefeated on the road this season (4-0-1) and currently ranked 10th in the Division III regional soccer rankings. All this is thanks in large part to a defense that has allowed just 5 goals all season. That defense has been led by goalkeeper Malick Faye (Bronx, N.Y. / MLK).

As of games through last Monday (10/7), Faye was 7th in the nation with a .907 save percentage, which is also tops in the NEAC. With the win on Saturday that percentage has since climbed to .927.

Unsurprisingly, Faye is also ranked 10th nationally in Goals-Against Average (GAA), allowing just .401 goals per game as of the report on October 7th.

In Saturday's game, the Wildcats wasted little time in staking their all-star keeper to a 1-0 lead. Senior Josh Kimber (Chittenango, N.Y. / Chittenango) gave the Wildcats all the offense they would need just 5:34 into the game, scoring his 4th goal of the year on an assist from sophomore Bazo Coulibaly.

The Express actually out shot the Wildcats 8 to 5 in the first half – but Faye as usual made things difficult. In recording his 6th shutout of the year, the senior goalie made 8 saves, four in each half.

In the 87th minute Diego Montaleza (New York, N.Y. / MLK) gave SUNYIT some security with his team-leading 9th goal of the season. The senior midfielder is having one of his best years, leading the Wildcats in both goals and assists (6).

The Wildcats now have just one conference game remaining, a home match up with Morrisville State on Oct. 26th. The game will also be Senior Day for the Wildcats. Prior to that game SUNYIT will take on 3 non-conference foes, beginning with a home game against SUNY Canton on Friday, October 18th. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
