Box Score UTICA, NY – Sophomore Lyndsey Brognano (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) netted 22 points and senior Tamara Williams (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) finished with 12 points and 19 rebounds as the SUNYIT women's basketball team registered its third straight victory with a 61-49 win over the visiting Penn State Berks Nittany Lions Sunday. The Wildcats are now 11-5 in the NEAC and 12-6 overall, while Berks dropped to 9-6 in the conference and 10-8 overall.
Brognano, currently the team's leading scorer at 16.1 points per game, scored 13 points in the first half on 4-of-8 shooting from the field, which included going 3-of-5 from 3-point land, to help the Wildcats control the game early on. Brognano and Williams would then combine to score 17 of SUNYIT's 27 points in the second half to help the Wildcats secure the victory.
It was the sixth double-double of the season for Williams, who also finished with a game-best three blocks.
The contest was tight in the first half, as both teams would be tied at 14 after nine minutes of play. That's when SUNYIT would put on a full-court press, which forced nine Berks turnovers from that point on and helped the Wildcats take a 12-point, 34-22 lead into halftime.
The press would continue to be effective in the second half, as the Wildcats held a double-digit lead for all but 1:32 of action in the half en route to the victory.
Senior Taylor Topping (Bronx, NY/Preston) finished with 16 points and nine boards and also added five huge steals during the press that led to many of the team's 20 points off turnovers. Junior Kwanisha Jones (San Antonio, TX/Indian River) contributed eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Dorian Bishop scored 11 points for Berks, while Emily Pufnock and Steph Binder each added 10 points.
The Wildcats will be back in action this Wednesday when they host conference rival Keuka College at the Campus Center Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
