WBB: Wildcats Unable to Overcome Early Deficit at Geneseo

Geneseo, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly women's basketball team dropped a 69–32 decision to the SUNY Geneseo Knights on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 7-17 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

SUNY Poly found itself in an early hole after Geneseo capitalized on turnovers and converted in transition. Following an opening layup by Kayla Wilson off a Bryanna Lucas assist to tie the game at 2–2, the Knights answered with a 13–2 run. Grace Galgano and Audrey Hintz scored in the paint, while Maggie McGrane knocked down a three-pointer to push Geneseo ahead 15–4 midway through the frame.

The Knights continued to pressure defensively, forcing multiple Wildcat turnovers that led to fastbreak opportunities. Eva Elliot sparked the surge with consecutive transition baskets, and Aliza Whitehead added a pair of free throws late in the quarter. Geneseo closed the opening period on a 19–2 run to take a 21–4 advantage.

In the second quarter, the Wildcats looked to settle in offensively. Alysa Jackson converted two free throws, and Sanaa Lee added a jumper in the paint to trim the deficit. However, Geneseo maintained control behind strong interior play from Kristin Suydam and McGrane, who combined for multiple second-chance points and fastbreak finishes. A late layup from Lucas provided a spark, but the Knights carried a 31–12 lead into halftime.

Out of the break, SUNY Poly showed improved energy on both ends of the floor. Lee scored inside off a feed from Isabella Kroll, Wilson added a layup through contact, and Alivia Turk connected on a mid-range jumper. Jackson later drained a three-pointer to cut the margin under 20. Despite the Wildcats' defensive efforts—including a block from Lee—Geneseo responded with timely baskets from Suydam and a late jumper by Zephyr Connolly to take a 45–22 lead into the fourth.

In the final quarter, Geneseo extended its lead with efficient free-throw shooting and continued success in transition. Hintz and Suydam converted inside, while Ellie Clearwater knocked down a three-pointer during a decisive stretch.

SUNY Poly continued to compete down the stretch. Turk buried a three-pointer from the wing off a Jackson assist, Jackson added two free throws, and Wilson scored on a fastbreak layup before finishing with another basket in the closing seconds. Rebeckah Tittle contributed defensively with a late block, and Lucas added a steal in the final minutes.

Despite the Wildcats' efforts in the second half, the early deficit proved too much to overcome as Geneseo secured the 69–32 victory.
