Box Score UTICA, NY – The SUNYIT women's basketball team had nine different Lady Wildcats put points on the board to get past the visiting Penn State Abington Nittany Lions 69-60 in NEAC action at the Campus Center Gymnasium Saturday. The Wildcats, winners of two straight, are now 10-5 in the NEAC and 11-6 overall, while Abington dropped to 3-10 in conference play and 4-12 overall.
The Wildcats got off to a hot start, building a 24-4 lead over the first nine minutes of action before cruising into halftime up by 17 points, 38-21. SUNYIT let up a bit in the second half, which allowed the Lions to fight their way back into the contest and be down just eight, 44-36, with 13:44 left to play. However, a 19-7 Wildcat run over the next seven minutes put them back up by 20 and allowed them cruise to victory the rest of the way.
Sophomore Lyndsey Brognano (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) led the way with 12 points in 25 minutes of action, while junior Caitlin Cottell (Eatontown, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) and freshman Abbey Hanehan (Stillwater, NY/Stillwater) added 11 points apiece. Junior Kwanisha Jones (San Antonio, TX/Indian River) dished out a game-high nine assists and fellow classmate Sarah Couvillon (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) grabbed a team-best nine rebounds to go along with six points.
Trish Watson registered 20 points and seven assists for Abington, while Samantha Frick scored 17 points and Kim Breslin finished with 16 points, a game-high four blocks and three steals.
The Wildcats will look to make it three wins in a row when they host conference rival Penn State Berks tomorrow at noon.
