UTICA, NY

– The SUNYIT women's basketball team went 2-0 during two NEAC contests this weekend, defeating Penn State Berks 90-71 Saturday and Penn State Abington 66-46 Sunday to remain undefeated in conference play at 3-0 and improve to 4-1 overall.

The Lady Wildcats never trailed against Berks, quickly building a 16-point, 19-3 lead four minutes into the contest and never looking back.  SUNYIT shot 53 percent from the field on the day while holding Berks to 32 percent shooting.

Senior Tamara Williams (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) went 8-for-11 from the field and finished with a game-high 18 points, while junior Sarah Couvillon (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga) posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds in just 22 minutes of action.  Sophomore Kayla McNeil (Stillwater, NY/Stillwater) scored 13 points, senior Taylor Topping (Bronx, NY/Preston) registered 12 points, six boards and two steals and sophomore Lyndsey Brognano (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) added 10 points.  Kwanisha Jones (San Antonio, TX/Indian River) dished out a game-high nine assists and recorded a team-high four steals.

It was much of the same against Abington, as the Wildcats opened the contest with nine unanswered points and eventually built a double-digit lead that they would not relinquish the rest of the way.  The Wildcats were aggressive on defense once again, holding Abington to 38 percent shooting and forcing 17 turnovers while only committing nine of their own.

Brognano scored a team-best 15 points and dished out five assists, while freshman Nailah Cherry (Roosevelt, NY/Roosevelt) added 11 points.  Williams had a solid all-around game with six points, seven rebounds, three assists, a game-high three blocks and two steals, while Couvillon hauled down 14 boards and scored seven points.

Jones posted game highs of seven assists and four steals, while McNeil went 5-for-6 from the field and finished with 10 points.  Abington's Samantha Frick scored a game-high 21 points and added nine rebounds.

The Wildcats will look to continue their hot streak this Wednesday when they host conference rival Cazenovia College at the Campus Center Gymnasium.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm.

The event will also be the site of Faculty/Staff & Family Night, where pizza, wings and soft drinks will be served for SUNYIT faculty, staff and families in the conference room of the Athletics Office at 6:30 pm.  Additionally, Jerry Kraus, the PR/Development Director at Stevens-Swan Humane Society and formerly "Dr. Rock" at WOUR Radio, will be the guest announcer for the night.  Can or bags of dog and/or cat food will be collected at the door for donation to Stevens-Swan Humane Society as well.
