Box Score POTSDAM, NY – The SUNYIT women's basketball team opened the 2010-11 season on a high note with a lopsided 58-33 victory over SUNY Canton Sunday, with the game played at Clarkson University's Alumni Gym. The Lady Wildcats are now 1-0 while Canton fell to 1-4 overall.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 9-0 lead within the first three minutes of the contest and never looked back, building their lead by as much as 29 points before cruising to the 25-point victory. The Wildcats were tenacious on defense, holding Canton to just 12 made baskets and 18 percent shooting from the field while registering nine steals and seven blocks as a team.
Senior Tamara Williams (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) finished with a double-double of 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with a game-best three blocked shots in just 19 minutes of action. Fellow classmate Taylor Topping (Bronx, NY/Preston) went 5-of-8 from the field and led all scorers with 13 points while also grabbing four boards in just 17 minutes of work, while sophomore Kayla McNeil (Stillwater, NY/Stillwater) registered 10 points and four steals. Sophomore Lyndsey Brognano (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) tallied nine points, three rebounds and a game-high four steals.
Heather Lottie led Canton with nine points, while Mindy Small grabbed six rebounds and recorded three steals.
The Wildcats will be back in action this Wednesday when they host NEAC rival Wilson College at the Campus Center Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for noon.
