WLAX: Wildcats Battle Throughout but Fall to Potsdam on the Road

Potsdam, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly Wildcats battled across all four quarters on Wednesday afternoon but ultimately fell to SUNY Potsdam by a final score of 13–5. With the result, The Wildcats fall to 0-2 on the season.

Potsdam controlled the opening draw and applied early pressure, breaking through at the 13:49 mark when Abby Kraus scored the game's first goal. The Wildcats settled in and responded midway through the period as Brinley Ronan found the net at 8:02 to even the score, but the Bears used a late surge, including a man-up opportunity and back-to-back tallies in the closing minutes, to take a 4–1 advantage after one. Goalkeeper Rebecca Thomas kept SUNY Poly within striking distance with multiple saves against point-blank chances during the opening frame.

SUNY Poly generated early opportunities in the second quarter, and their persistence paid off when Lindsay Ellis converted a man-up goal off an assist from Andi Walters at 13:34 to trim the deficit to two. Potsdam answered quickly with a man-up score of its own and added another late in the half to build a 6–2 lead at the break. Thomas continued to anchor the Wildcats defensively, turning away several shots during a sustained stretch of Bears possession.

The Bears opened the second half with consecutive goals to extend their lead, but SUNY Poly continued to compete. Ronan netted her second of the day on a free-position shot at 4:20 in the third, and Alexa Ulanday added a goal in the final minute of the period to bring the Wildcats within 9–4 heading into the fourth. Ground balls and defensive efforts from Katelynn Truax, Ulanday, and others helped create transition chances as SUNY Poly searched for momentum.

Potsdam halted that push early in the final quarter with another goal and later added insurance scores to maintain control. Ronan completed her hat trick at 5:37 off a feed from Ellis, but the Bears responded quickly and continued to capitalize on possessions down the stretch. Thomas made late saves to close out the contest, and the Wildcats continued to battle until the final whistle.
