WLAX: Wildcats Come Up Short Against Visiting Roos

Utica, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly women's lacrosse team battled on its home turf Wednesday afternoon but ultimately fell to SUNY Canton by a final score of 9–2. With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 0-3 on the season.

Canton struck first midway through the opening quarter, capitalizing on a free-position opportunity at 12:15 to take a 1–0 lead. The Wildcats responded late in the period when Alexa Ulanday found the back of the net at 3:10 to even the score at 1–1. Thomas came up with multiple saves in the frame, including stops on free-position attempts, to keep SUNY Poly within reach. However, Canton converted another free-position chance in the final minute to carry a 2–1 advantage into the second.

The second quarter featured strong defensive play and physicality from both sides, with several green cards issued throughout the period. Thomas continued to anchor the Wildcats with key saves, while Katelynn Truax, Brinley Ronan, and Alyssa Hawkins contributed caused turnovers and ground balls to disrupt Canton's rhythm. SUNY Poly generated opportunities, including free-position shots from Ronan and Madyn LaFleur, but Canton's goalkeeper Laura Falandys turned them away. The Roos added a late goal at 3:07, extending their lead to 3–1 heading into halftime.

Out of the break, Canton applied steady pressure, but Thomas remained composed in net, making several point-blank saves to keep the deficit manageable. After a man-up goal by the Roos pushed the score to 4–1, SUNY Poly answered at 3:51 when Rylie Fischer converted on a free-position shot to cut the margin to 4–2. The Wildcats continued to fight for possession, with Truax and Ulanday helping generate transition chances, but Canton maintained its two-goal cushion entering the fourth.

In the final quarter, Canton seized control with a string of goals, including multiple free-position conversions and assisted tallies, to widen the gap. Despite continued efforts from Hawkins and Ronan on the offensive end and additional saves from Thomas in the closing minutes, the Wildcats were unable to mount a comeback. SUNY Poly continued to compete until the final whistle, but the Roos' late run secured the 9–2 decision.
