WLAX: Wildcats Fall in Season Opener vs Oswego

Utica, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly Wildcats battled throughout four quarters on Wednesday evening but ultimately fell to visiting SUNY Oswego by a final score of 21–0. With the result, the Wildcats start their season with a record of 0-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Oswego controlled the opening draw and applied immediate offensive pressure, firing off multiple early shots before Aubri Greene broke through at the 13:08 mark to open the scoring. Despite several strong saves from goalkeeper Rebecca Thomas and defensive efforts from Brinley Ronan and Lilly Hargarther, the Lakers added goals from Cassidy Croce, Alexis Hill, and Noelle Smith during a late first-period surge to take a 7–0 lead after one.

In the second period, SUNY Poly showed resilience defensively, forcing turnovers from Kathryn Nash and Cecilia Witherel while Alexa Ulanday and Ronan each caused key disruptions in transition. Thomas continued to stand tall in net with several point-blank stops, but Oswego converted on free-position chances and extended its lead with a series of tallies, carrying a 12–0 advantage into halftime.

The Wildcats opened the third with a draw control and looked to build momentum, highlighted by ground balls from Lindsay Ellis and Ronan and a man-up opportunity midway through the frame. Madyn LaFleur generated SUNY Poly's best offensive chances of the afternoon with multiple shots, including one on goal that forced a save from Oswego's Sophia Diaz. The Lakers, however, capitalized on possession stretches and pushed the margin to 16–0 heading into the final quarter.

Oswego continued its push in the fourth, but the Wildcats kept competing until the final whistle. Andi Walters secured a late ground ball and clear, while Makenzie Pierce registered a shot on cage in the closing minutes. SUNY Poly also forced late turnovers and executed clears in the final seconds, underscoring the team's persistence despite the deficit.
