Rochester, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly women's soccer team fell 9-0 on the road to the Saint John Fisher Cardinals. Despite the final score, goalkeeper Samantha Barrett turned in a gritty performance, facing constant pressure and making double-digit saves to keep the Wildcats competing. With the loss, SUNY Poly moves to 1-7-1 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Cardinals wasted little time applying pressure, forcing Barrett into an early save just two minutes in before breaking through with the opening goal seconds later. Barrett responded with poise, coming up big with stops in the 5th, 7th, and 14th minutes to keep the Wildcats within striking distance. Fisher doubled its lead in the 12th and added a third in the 19th, but Barrett continued to battle, denying shots from close range and controlling several dangerous corner kick opportunities.
SUNY Poly made adjustments midway through the first half, with Cassie Miller and McKenna Furner entering to help steady the back line. Even with fresh legs, the Cardinals added tallies in the 33rd, 37th, and on a penalty in the 43rd to take a 6-0 lead into the break.
In the second half,. Barrett was called upon again early, making an excellent stop in the 47th minute before adding more saves in the 53rd, 56th, and 59th. Substitutions from Brooke Bush and others gave the Wildcats a spark, but Fisher extended the advantage with goals in the 48th, 63rd, and 82nd minutes.
Barrett finished the match strong with saves in the 67th, 68th, 84th, and 87th minutes, closing out another resilient outing in net despite the heavy workload.
