Utica, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly women's soccer team dropped a road contest to the Utica University Pioneers by a score of 7-0. Goalkeeper Samantha Barrett turned in a busy performance with double-digit saves as the Wildcats battled against a relentless Utica attack. With the loss, Poly moves to 1-7-1 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Utica came out pressing from the opening whistle, generating multiple chances in the first 15 minutes. Barrett denied Rylee Lamphere twice (7', 9') and turned away back-to-back efforts from Madison Wagner in the 10th and 11th minutes, before a strike from Wagner rattled the crossbar in the 12th.
The Pioneers eventually broke through in the 19th minute, as Lamphere finished off a feed from Natalia Bell to make it 1-0. She doubled the lead less than 10 minutes later, converting again from Bell and Wagner in the 29th. Utica quickly piled on with goals from Kayla Giovingo (30') and another from Lamphere just 30 seconds later to complete her first-half hat trick.
Despite more saves from Barrett to slow the surge, Utica added a fifth tally in the 41st minute through Carly Cordts, sending the Wildcats into the break trailing 5-0.
Poly tightened up defensively to start the second half, with Barrett again stepping up to deny Lamphere (46', 50') and Wagner (54'). Utica broke through again in the 57th minute when Adrianna Calabria extended the advantage to 6-0. Barrett continued to battle, making stops on Bailey Hewson (63'), Ayla Flockton (66'), and Samantha Ferguson (72') to hold off further damage.
The Pioneers added one final tally in the closing moments, with Hewson finding the net in the 90th minute to seal the 7-0 result.
