Rochester, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly women's lacrosse team was defeated by the St. John Fisher Cardinals by a score of 27-0. The Wildcats were held to just two shots, while goalie Jayden Brown made 9 saves in an effort to keep her team in the game. The Wildcats are now 1-9 on the season.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
St. John Fisher wasted no time establishing control, jumping out to a fast start and scoring five goals within the first five minutes of play. SUNY Poly struggled to maintain possession and break through St. John's ride, resulting in repeated turnovers and transition opportunities for the visitors.
Wildcat goalkeeper Jayden Brown was immediately tested and came up with several quality saves throughout the period, including key stops on Sydney Carpenter and Ella Stewart. However, the sheer volume of St. John's offensive chances proved overwhelming. By the end of the quarter, the Cardinals had built a commanding 12–0 lead.
The Cardinals continued to control possession in the second frame, extending their lead with six more goals. SUNY Poly's defense worked hard to limit easy looks, with Brown adding multiple saves, including a free-position denial.
The Wildcats did find moments of composure on clears, with Paige Renwick and Kirsten Lighthall helping move the ball upfield. Still, offensive opportunities remained scarce, and turnovers kept SUNY Poly on their heels. A yellow card to Maya Massaro gave St. John a man-up opportunity, which they capitalized on to push the score to 18–0 by halftime.
The third quarter saw SUNY Poly trying to break through on the draw and in transition, but struggles with ball control persisted. The Cardinals added four more goals, continuing their efficient attack and spreading the scoring across their bench.
Jayden Brown remained a bright spot for SUNY Poly, making several saves—including a point-blank stop on Charlotte Walter—and playing aggressively outside the crease to help clear under pressure. Unfortunately, SUNY Poly was unable to turn those stops into offensive rhythm, as turnovers again stalled progress.
The Wildcats managed to generate their best scoring chances late in the game. Katelynn Truax got off a solid shot that was saved by St. John's backup goalie Maggie Cross, and Brinley Ronan earned a free-position shot that was also turned away.
SUNY Poly continued to battle, with Abigail Rosaschi winning a pair of draw controls and fighting for possession in the midfield. But St. John remained in control through the final whistle, tacking on five more goals in the closing quarter to cap off a 27-0 victory.Â
