Hamburg, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly men's lacrosse team picked up their second win in a row, defeating the Hilbert College Hawks by a score of 15-3. Eight different Wildcats tallied goals, with Cooper Fitzgerald and Griffin LaFleur both scoring hat tricks. The Wildcats are now 2-0 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The game kicked off with a quick faceoff win by Hilbert, but the Wildcats wasted little time asserting control. Early turnovers from Hilbert allowed SUNY Poly to capitalize. The first goal came when Liam Podszebka scored at the 8:38 mark. That goal sparked a momentum shift as the Wildcats quickly added another, with Kai Hew finding the back of the net just a minute later.
Despite a late goal by Hilbert's Joey DiMaria, SUNY Poly continued to dominate. Luke Taylor's buzzer-beater at the end of the quarter gave the Wildcats a 3-1 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Wildcats went to work in the second quarter, starting with a goal from Cooper Fitzgerald. Luke Taylor followed up with another goal at the 4:33 mark, giving them a 5-1 lead. Ryan Carroll would add two more goals before half, giving the Wildcats a 7-1 lead after the first 30 minutes.
The third quarter was another strong quarter for SUNY Poly. Griffin LaFleur opened the second half with a goal assisted at the 13:58 mark, bringing the score to 8-1. Cooper Fitzgerald and Ian Short then added more goals, giving the Wildcats a 12-2 advantage by the end of the quarter. The Hawks offense struggled to find a rhythm, with many of their shots being either blocked or saved by the excellent goalkeeping from Joseph VanZandt and later Noah Infantino.
The fourth quarter saw more of the same, as SUNY Poly's defense kept Hilbert's shooters at bay. Griffin LaFleur would add another goal to his tally, with an assist from Mitchell Taylor, extending the lead to 15-3—a score the Wildcats would maintain to secure their second win of the season.
