Utica, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly women's basketball team was defeated by the Nazareth Golden Flyers with a final score of 58-33. Alysa Jackson led the Wildcats with 11 points, while Sanaa Lee contributed nine points and six blocks. With the loss, SUNY Poly's record drops to 3-15 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Nazareth got off to a quick start, with Sarina McDowell hitting a jumper and Madalyn Kelly adding a fast-break layup. However, SUNY Poly answered back through strong individual plays by Sanaa Lee, who scored a layup and converted a pair of free throws. Kelsey Meca then nailed a three-pointer, briefly giving the Wildcats a 5-4 lead.
Nazareth's defense remained strong, with key blocks and steals, but SUNY Poly kept the pressure on. Despite a few missed opportunities and turnovers, Nazareth capitalized on timely shots to hold a slim advantage. At the end of the first quarter, the Wildcats were trailing 11-9 but were still within striking distance.
The second quarter saw both teams struggling to find their rhythm. However, Nazareth broke through with back-to-back three-pointers from Sarina McDowell and Payton Littlefield. SUNY Poly answered with a solid three-pointer from Kate Donnelly and some strong defensive efforts from Lee, but turnovers allowed Nazareth to extend their lead. The Golden Flyers capitalized on those turnovers, and by halftime, they had opened up a 30-15 lead.
Nazareth continued to push their advantage in the third quarter, as efficient shooting and timely baskets from Katie MacLachlan, McDowell, and Littlefield extended their lead further. SUNY Poly did manage a few points, including a fast-break layup from Jackson and another three-pointer from Donnelly, but Nazareth's defense and offensive execution kept them in control.
In the fourth quarter, SUNY Poly couldn't make a significant dent in the lead despite a few late efforts from Lee, who scored a pair of layups, and Alivia Turk, who added free throws. Nazareth's defense remained stout, and their efficient scoring helped them cruise to a 58-33 victory.
