Utica, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly men's basketball team saw their five-game winning streak come to an end with a 74-56 loss to the Nazareth Golden Flyers. Kamryn Comstock led the Wildcats with 13 points and seven rebounds. SUNY Poly now stands at 12-7 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Nazareth came out strong, with Jaylen Savage scoring early to help his team jump to a 5-0 lead. Luke Insley and Jack Broderick followed up with baskets inside, extending the lead to 14-6 midway through the first half.
SUNY Poly struggled with their shooting, particularly from beyond the arc, but Kamryn Comstock and Anthony Rose worked to keep the Wildcats in the game. Rose cut the deficit to 14-9 with a fast-break layup with just over 13 minutes remaining. Despite their efforts, Nazareth's balanced scoring kept them in control. Merritt Holly added a layup and a free throw, while Broderick hit a crucial three-pointer, pushing the lead to 17-6.
The Wildcats fought back, with Dylan Ernst and Rose contributing key shots late in the half, but Nazareth responded with timely baskets, including a three-pointer from Tyler Putney to push their lead back to double digits. As the clock wound down, Nazareth took a 35-24 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Nazareth extended their lead quickly with a fast-break three-pointer from Putney, making it 38-24. SUNY Poly battled back, with Comstock hitting a three and a layup to narrow the gap to 40-29, but Merritt Holly was dominant inside, scoring several layups to keep the Golden Flyers in control.
Nazareth continued to capitalize on turnovers, with Savage and Insley contributing key baskets. Despite bright moments from SUNY Poly—such as a three-pointer from Elijah Smith and solid play from Cheickne Toure—Nazareth's offense, led by Holly and Putney, remained relentless. With the Golden Flyers up 60-39, SUNY Poly struggled to regain momentum, and Nazareth cruised to a 74-56 victory.
Obviously not the outcome we wanted tonight," said head coach Rob Schoener. "Credit to Naz, they are a very good team. We just could never get in a good rhythm on either end tonight."
