WBB: Wildcats Clinch Road Win Over Pioneers

Utica, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly women's basketball team earned a 72-62 victory over Utica University, powered by a standout performance from Alysa Jackson, who scored 28 points on 9-of-16 shooting. Jackson was supported by double-digit scoring from Hannah Shipley and Alivia Turk, while Sanaa Lee grabbed 10 rebounds to help the Wildcats secure the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The game opened with a back-and-forth battle between the Wildcats and the Pioneers. Utica jumped out to an early lead with a three-pointer from Vanessa Hall, but SUNY Poly quickly responded, led by Jackson and Faith Wagner. Both teams struggled with turnovers, but the Wildcats found their rhythm with a couple of key three-pointers from Shipley. Utica stayed close thanks to strong performances from Hall and Hannah Godkin. After a tight back-and-forth, SUNY Poly held a slim 20-19 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Utica briefly gained an edge, fueled by a few timely three-pointers and layups. However, the Wildcats kept it close with contributions from Turk and Kelsey Meca. Despite the Pioneers' push, SUNY Poly held a narrow 37-36 advantage at halftime.

The third quarter was a turning point for SUNY Poly. After a quick three-pointer from Jackson, the Wildcats surged ahead with key plays from Jackson, Turk, and Meca. Turk's fastbreak layup and a couple of important three-pointers pushed the lead to as much as 12 points. Heading into the final frame, SUNY Poly held a 56-46 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Jackson continued to shine, scoring crucial points, including another three-pointer and key layups in the paint. Utica fought back with some three-pointers and layups, but the Wildcats' defense and clutch free throws sealed the 72-62 victory.
