Utica, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly men's basketball team secured their second win in as many nights, defeating the Houghton Highlanders 90-74. LaMarqus Merchant Jr. led the Wildcats with 21 points, while Daimarr Miller posted a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. SUNY Poly is now 9-6 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Wildcats wasted no time establishing a lead, starting with a three-pointer from Cheickne Toure, followed by another from Anthony Rose, giving them an early 6-0 advantage. Houghton responded, but SUNY Poly continued to answer with consistent scoring. Merchant Jr., Rose, and William Scanlon all contributed baskets to keep the Wildcats in control. Throughout the first half, SUNY Poly capitalized on Houghton's turnovers, turning steals into easy points, including a fastbreak layup by Merchant Jr. The Wildcats also controlled the boards, securing multiple offensive rebounds that led to second-chance opportunities. Despite a late push by Houghton, the Wildcats entered halftime leading 47-33.
In the second half, SUNY Poly extended their lead with continued strong performances from Rose and Miller. Although Houghton made efforts to close the gap, the Wildcats' offensive efficiency proved too much to overcome. SUNY Poly continued to capitalize on turnovers and fast breaks, while their depth and consistent shooting kept them ahead. Despite a hard-fought effort from Houghton, the Wildcats held on for the 90-74 victory.
"Anytime you go 2-0 on a weekend in the Empire 8 it was a good weekend, said head coach Rob Schoener. "The guys started fast today and kept their foot on the pedal for 40 mins. We set the tone with our defense early, that's how it has to be."
