Morrisville, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly women's soccer team earned a 2-0 victory over Hilbert College on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats controlled play throughout the match, with Yetneliz Lugo Mateo and Abigail Hughes each finding the back of the net to lead SUNY Poly to the shutout victory. Skylar Blackwell made several key saves in goal as the Wildcats held Hilbert off the scoreboard.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SUNY Poly came out attacking early, with Kara Mertz recording a pair of shots in the opening eight minutes. The Wildcats continued to pressure the Hilbert defense with multiple corner kicks before breaking through in the 13th minute. Lugo Mateo found the back of the net at 12:55, with Mertz providing the assist, to give SUNY Poly an early 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats continued to create opportunities throughout the remainder of the first half. Lugo Mateo registered three additional shots on goal, while Katelyn Meehan, Amelia Guarascio, Rylee Unebasami and Abigail Hughes also recorded attempts. Hilbert goalkeeper Keira McFarland kept the Wildcats from extending their lead, making several saves.
SUNY Poly goalkeeper Skylar Blackwell also came up big in the first half, making saves on shots from Valentine Hauser and Kendall Shetter as the Wildcats carried their 1-0 advantage into halftime.
The Wildcats continued to apply pressure after halftime, with Hughes and Lugo Mateo each putting shots on goal early in the second half. Lugo Mateo continued to test the Hilbert defense, recording multiple shots on target, while Mertz and Meehan also created opportunities.
SUNY Poly eventually doubled its advantage in the 75th minute when Hughes found the back of the net at 74:21 to make it 2-0. The Wildcats continued to generate chances late in the match, while Blackwell made three saves in the final six minutes to preserve the shutout.
The Wildcats closed out the match with a strong defensive effort, securing the 2-0 victory and their shutout win over Hilbert.
