Oswego, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly men's soccer team fell 3-0 to SUNY Oswego on Friday afternoon at Laker Turf Stadium. The Wildcats battled throughout the contest and created several scoring opportunities, but Oswego's defense and goalkeeper Kyle Rose kept SUNY Poly off the scoreboard. Tyler Barth made several key saves for the Wildcats, while Oswego received goals from Ian Husselbeck and Dylan Manriquez.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Wildcats created an early opportunity when Marcus Cole recorded SUNY Poly's first shot of the afternoon in the fourth minute. Cole tested Oswego goalkeeper Kyle Rose again in the 13th minute, but Rose made the save. Oswego began to generate pressure of its own before earning a penalty kick in the 20th minute. Ian Husselbeck converted the attempt to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead.
SUNY Poly continued to look for an equalizer, with Owen Champion recording a shot in the 23rd minute. Barth kept the Wildcats within one with several saves, including stops on shots from Vladimir Lavrynenko and Ian Husselbeck. Oswego eventually doubled its advantage in the 35th minute when Husselbeck scored his second goal of the afternoon off an assist from Lavrynenko.
The Wildcats nearly found an answer before halftime when Miguel Casarrubias put a shot on target in the 41st minute, but Rose made the save. Barth added another stop late in the half on a shot from Luke Pena, sending SUNY Poly into halftime trailing 2-0.
SUNY Poly came out aggressively in the second half, with Cole recording a shot just 10 seconds into the period. The Wildcats continued to pressure the Oswego defense, as Lucas Russell fired a shot in the 56th minute and Cole struck the woodwork in the 64th minute. Johnpaul Jerome also recorded a shot during the stretch.
The Wildcats continued to create chances as the second half progressed. Elijah North and Jael Casimir both put shots on target in the 72nd minute, but Rose turned both attempts away. Barth answered with another save of his own shortly afterward, stopping a shot from Oswego's Jacob Bachrach.
Oswego added an insurance goal in the 81st minute when Dylan Manriquez scored off an assist from Aiden Lawrence to make it 3-0. SUNY Poly continued to battle in the closing minutes, with Andrew Sprenger and North recording additional shots, but the Wildcats were unable to break through.
