Utica, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to SUNY Brockport on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats trailed 1-0 at halftime before the Golden Eagles added a second goal in the 69th minute to secure the victory. Skylar Blackwell made 13 saves in goal for SUNY Poly, while Kara Mertz and Yetneliz Lugo Mateo each recorded a shot on goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Brockport created several early scoring opportunities, but Blackwell kept the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard with saves on shots from McKenna Slate in the seventh and 18th minutes. Brockport also hit the woodwork in the ninth minute before Blackwell made another save on Slate in the 20th minute.
The Golden Eagles broke through in the 21st minute when Parker Graham scored at 20:27 to give Brockport a 1-0 lead. SUNY Poly looked to respond, with Lugo Mateo recording a shot shortly after the goal.
Brockport continued to generate chances throughout the remainder of the opening half, but Blackwell came up with several more saves to keep the Wildcats within one. Mertz recorded SUNY Poly's first shot on goal in the 37th minute, but Brockport goalkeeper Cameryn Childs made the save. Blackwell added saves on shots from Marisa Closson, Amelia Breton and Chiara Torriani before halftime as Brockport carried its 1-0 advantage into the break.
The Golden Eagles continued to apply pressure early in the second half, with Blackwell making saves on shots from Sophia Brooks and Brianna Marino. Lugo Mateo put a shot on goal in the 64th minute, but Childs made the save to preserve Brockport's lead.
Brockport doubled its advantage in the 69th minute when Amelia Breton converted a penalty kick to make it 2-0. The Wildcats continued to battle, with Lily Arduini recording a shot in the 72nd minute.
Blackwell kept SUNY Poly within striking distance with additional saves throughout the final 20 minutes, including stops on shots from Slate and Sofia Starrow. Brockport also hit the woodwork in the 83rd minute, while Blackwell made another save shortly afterward.
The Wildcats continued to compete through the final minutes, but Brockport's defense held SUNY Poly off the scoreboard as the Golden Eagles secured the 2-0 victory.
