Utica, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly men's lacrosse team fell to SUNY Geneseo on Saturday afternoon by an 18–6 final. With the loss, the Wildcats move to 5-9 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Geneseo controlled the early pace in the opening quarter, striking first midway through the frame and quickly adding another to take a 2–0 lead. SUNY Poly responded with a strong man-up opportunity, as Kai Hew finished off a feed from Cooper Fitzgerald to get the Wildcats on the board. Ryan Carroll later tied the game at 2–2, and Ajay Johnson added another to keep things even. However, Geneseo closed the quarter on a decisive run, scoring four straight goals in the final minutes to take a 6–3 advantage after one.
In the second quarter, the Wildcats looked to claw back into the game. Mitchell Taylor converted on an extra-man opportunity off an assist from Hew to cut the deficit to 6–4. Despite several strong saves from goalkeeper Mac Fitzgerald and consistent pressure offensively, SUNY Poly struggled to find the back of the net. Geneseo capitalized on key possessions, scoring four unanswered goals—including a man-up tally as time expired—to extend its lead to 10–4 heading into halftime.
Coming out of the break, SUNY Poly showed early promise as Luke Taylor scored on a man-up opportunity, assisted by Mitchell Taylor, to make it 10–5. Geneseo answered quickly, however, and began to pull away with a dominant stretch of play. The Knights capitalized on faceoff wins and second-chance opportunities, scoring five of the next six goals. Ajay Johnson added his second of the game for the Wildcats, but SUNY Poly trailed 15–6 heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth, Geneseo continued to control possession and tempo, limiting SUNY Poly's offensive chances. The Knights added three more goals in the period while the Wildcats were unable to generate sustained scoring opportunities. Despite continued effort on both ends and additional saves from Fitzgerald, SUNY Poly could not close the gap as Geneseo secured the 18–6 victory.
