WLAX: Wildcats Pull Away in Second Half to Defeat Keuka

HOW IT HAPPENED:

SUNY Poly came out with strong early energy and immediately pressured Keuka in transition. After forcing a pair of early turnovers, the Wildcats struck first when Katelynn Truax finished off an assist from Madyn LaFleur at the 13:54 mark to give SUNY Poly a 1–0 lead.

The Wildcats continued to generate chances throughout the opening quarter, with Brinley Ronan and Makenzie Pierce each putting shots on goal, but Keuka goalkeeper Lauren Vitello kept the game close with several early saves. Keuka eventually answered midway through the frame, as Jessica Miller found the back of the net to even the score at 1–1.

SUNY Poly quickly responded. Following a foul that set up a free-position opportunity, Alyssa Hawkins converted at 4:28 to restore the Wildcat lead at 2–1. Keuka answered once again with a goal from Liz Spin, but SUNY Poly had the final word in the quarter when LaFleur scored with 2:08 remaining to send the Wildcats into the second period with a 3–2 advantage.

The second quarter turned into a defensive battle, with both teams trading possessions and physical play. SUNY Poly nearly extended its lead early when LaFleur rang a shot off the post, while Rebecca Thomas came up with a key stop on a Keuka free-position chance to preserve the lead.

The Wildcats eventually capitalized on a man-up opportunity midway through the quarter, as Ronan scored at 9:01 to push SUNY Poly ahead 4–2. Keuka, however, answered with a late surge. Lainie Forde scored twice in the final 5:28 of the half, including the equalizer with just 55 seconds remaining, sending the teams into the break deadlocked at 4–4.

SUNY Poly came out of halftime with its best stretch of the afternoon and completely flipped the momentum in the third quarter.

The Wildcats regained the lead just over two minutes into the half when Hawkins buried a goal off another assist from LaFleur to make it 5–4. Moments later, while playing a player down, SUNY Poly delivered one of its biggest plays of the game as Ronan scored a man-down goal off a LaFleur feed at 9:52 to stretch the lead to two.

That sequence opened the floodgates.

After LaFleur converted a man-up goal off an assist from Lilly Hargarther, Alexa Ulanday scored off a rebound opportunity less than three minutes later to make it 8–4. The Wildcats continued to dominate possession and force turnovers, with Rylie Fischer, Truax, Ronan, and LaFleur all helping disrupt Keuka's clear attempts and transition game.

SUNY Poly capped the quarter with two more goals in the final four minutes. Ronan scored off an assist from Pierce at 3:27, and LaFleur added a free-position goal with 1:59 left to complete a six-goal Wildcat quarter and give SUNY Poly a commanding 10–4 lead entering the fourth.

Keuka attempted to make one final push in the final period, scoring the first goal of the quarter on a free-position chance before trimming the deficit to 11–8 with a quick three-goal stretch midway through the frame.

But each time the Wolves threatened, SUNY Poly had an answer.

Hawkins stopped the first bit of momentum with her third goal of the game at 9:40 off an assist from Truax, and after Keuka pulled within three, LaFleur converted another free-position goal at 4:32 to settle things down and make it 12–8.

The Wildcats then sealed the win in the closing minute when Ulanday added her second goal of the afternoon with 36 seconds remaining. SUNY Poly's defense closed things out from there, forcing multiple late turnovers, while Thomas came up with another strong stop and even caused a turnover in the final two minutes to help put the game away.

SUNY Poly finished with a balanced scoring effort, strong defensive pressure, and timely execution in the second half to secure the 13–8 road win.
