Utica, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly baseball team held off a late push to secure an 8–6 victory over Utica on Tuesday afternoon. The Wildcats built an early lead behind timely hitting and aggressive baserunning, then relied on strong pitching down the stretch to close out the win. With the win, the Wildcats are now 5-5 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Utica struck first in the top of the opening inning, capitalizing on a pair of wild pitches to plate a run despite not recording a hit and take a 1–0 lead.
SUNY Poly answered immediately in the bottom half. Johnny Yamin worked a leadoff walk and later scored on a double play to tie the game. Moments later, John Leonard delivered an RBI double to left center to bring home Maddox Garvey and give the Wildcats a 2–1 advantage.
The Wildcats added on in the second inning. Brody Liddy opened with a single, and after a pair of walks and a wild pitch moved runners into scoring position, SUNY Poly took advantage of a Utica error that allowed two unearned runs to score, extending the lead to 4–1.
SUNY Poly continued to build momentum in the third. After Zach Place reached and moved into scoring position, Quinn Hill came through with the big hit of the day—a three-RBI triple to right center—scoring Place, Tristan Allen, and Brody Liddy to push the lead to 7–1.
Utica chipped away in the fourth inning with an RBI double, making it 7–2, but SUNY Poly limited further damage by stranding two runners.
The visitors mounted their biggest threat in the fifth. A hit-by-pitch and a single set the stage before Lance Berger delivered a two-RBI double, part of a three-run inning that cut the Wildcats' lead to 7–5.
SUNY Poly responded in the bottom half of the fifth with an insurance run. Johnny Yamin walked and showcased aggressive baserunning with steals of both second and third before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Luke Landis, extending the advantage to 8–5.
From there, SUNY Poly's pitching staff settled in. The Wildcats retired Utica in order in the sixth and worked around traffic in the seventh and eighth innings, including a double play that erased a potential rally in the eighth.
Utica made one final push in the ninth. After a walk and another base runner reached, the Pioneers drove in a run with a single to cut the deficit to 8–6. However, SUNY Poly held firm, recording the final out on a fly ball to right field to secure the victory.
