WBB: Late Free Throws Lift Wildcats Past Alfred, 57–54

Utica, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly women's basketball team earned a hard-fought 57–54 victory over the Alfred University Saxons on Saturday afternoon, rallying late and closing out the game at the free-throw line to secure the conference win. With the win, the Wildcats move to 6-15 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

SUNY Poly and Alfred traded punches in a competitive opening quarter. Alfred struck first at the free-throw line, but SUNY Poly answered behind strong interior play from Sanaa Lee and Bryanna Lucas. Kelsey Meca knocked down a three-pointer to keep the Wildcats within reach, while Lee controlled the glass on both ends. Despite a late three from Alivia Turk, Alfred carried a slim 17–16 advantage into the second period.

The Wildcats found their rhythm in the second quarter, using balanced scoring and defensive pressure to take control. Lee opened the frame with a jumper, followed by back-to-back three-pointers from Alysa Jackson and Isabella Kroll that pushed SUNY Poly ahead. Kayla Wilson added a fastbreak layup after a steal, and Meca connected from beyond the arc to extend the lead. SUNY Poly went into halftime up 33–21, fueled by strong rebounding and transition offense.

Alfred made a push coming out of the break, trimming the deficit behind perimeter shooting and second-chance points. SUNY Poly answered with key baskets from Lee and Lucas, including a fastbreak layup and a three-pointer that helped maintain separation. Despite Alfred closing the gap late in the quarter, the Wildcats held a 42–37 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

The fourth quarter featured multiple lead changes and tense moments down the stretch. Alfred opened with a three-pointer to cut the margin to two, but SUNY Poly responded with baskets from Lee, Lucas, and Jackson to regain momentum. Alfred tied the game at 49 midway through the quarter, setting up a dramatic finish. Lucas and Jackson combined for clutch points in the final minutes, and SUNY Poly sealed the win at the free-throw line in the closing seconds, holding on for the 57–54 victory.
