WBB: Wildcats Come Up Short at Houghton

Houghton, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly women's basketball team fell on the road to Houghton University, 90–51, on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats move to 3-8  on the season following the conference setback.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Houghton set the tone early in the opening quarter, capitalizing on SUNY Poly turnovers and converting in transition to build an early advantage. Teghan Trocki and Crysta LaCrosse connected on early three-pointers, while Olivia Simser added another from beyond the arc to stretch the lead. SUNY Poly found offense in the paint, with Sanaa Lee and Alysa Jackson each scoring on layups, and Alivia Turk adding a three-point play late in the period. Despite several defensive stops highlighted by multiple blocks from Lee, Houghton closed the first quarter on a run to take a 28–7 lead.

The second quarter saw Houghton continue to pressure defensively and push the pace. Anna Dening and Tricia Carmer led a fastbreak-heavy attack as the hosts extended their advantage. SUNY Poly responded with perimeter shooting from Jackson, who knocked down a pair of three-pointers, and steady inside scoring from Bryanna Lucas. Kayla Wilson added points at the free-throw line, while Lucas continued to finish through contact in the paint. Despite SUNY Poly's efforts to find rhythm offensively, Houghton maintained control and carried a 58–24 lead into halftime.

SUNY Poly opened the third quarter strong, getting contributions on both ends of the floor. Kelsey Meca buried a three-pointer, while Jackson and Turk converted inside to keep the Wildcats competitive early in the frame. Lucas added another jumper, and Turk closed the quarter at the free-throw line. Houghton, however, continued to answer with efficient shooting, as Simser connected from deep and LaCrosse added mid-range jumpers. The hosts outscored SUNY Poly in the quarter and entered the final period ahead 80–38.

In the fourth quarter, SUNY Poly continued to battle. Wilson and Kirsten Lighthall chipped in at the free-throw line, while Jackson attacked the rim for multiple finishes late. Rebeckah Tittle provided a spark off the bench, scoring inside and converting from the stripe. Defensively, the Wildcats forced several turnovers and continued to contest shots, but Houghton remained steady, adding points in transition and from the perimeter to close out the 90–51 victory.
