Utica, N.Y. – The SUNY Poly women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 3-3 draw against the SUNY Morrisville Mustangs. The Wildcats overcame an early two-goal deficit and traded late goals with the Mustangs in a thrilling second half. Forwards Brooke Bush and Kara Mertz both found the back of the net, while goalkeeper Rylee Unebasami once again stood tall with several key saves to keep SUNY Poly in the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Mustangs jumped out to a quick start, scoring just two minutes into the match when Ashlyn Seguin found the back of the net off a feed from Haylie Buysse. SUNY Poly struggled to find its footing early, and Morrisville capitalized again in the 6th minute, this time with a goal from Buysse herself to make it 2-0.
Despite the early setback, the Wildcats began to build momentum midway through the first half. A string of corner kicks and attacking chances led to shot attempts from Aubree Smykla and Kara Mertz, but Morrisville goalkeeper Cheyenne Thomas kept the Wildcats at bay. SUNY Poly finally broke through in the 43rd minute, when Brooke Bush scored to cut the lead in half heading into the break.
The second half began with renewed energy from the Wildcats, and just two minutes in, Bush buried a penalty kick to draw the match level at 2-2. The Wildcats leaned heavily on their defense, and Unebasami came up big once again, denying multiple shots from Morrisville.
As the match wore on, both teams battled for control in a physical second half that saw numerous fouls and substitutions. The Mustangs briefly reclaimed the lead in the 82nd minute when Ava Malin scored off a setup by Callie Lafontaine. But SUNY Poly wasted no time responding, as just over a minute later, Mertz equalized the game with a well-placed shot following a pass from Samantha Barrett, tying the game at 3-3.
The final minutes featured a last push from Morrisville, including a late corner and a shot from Jaidon Brodie that went wide, but neither side could find the winner.
