BB: Wildcats Split DH Against Soaring Eagles

Cortland, N.Y. - The suny poly baseball team split their doubleheader against the Elmira College Soaring Eagles, winning game one by a score of 16-0 and losing game two by a score of 13-12. Quinn Hill shined at the plate for the Wildcats, hitting 5-7 with three RBIs and three walks. The wildcats are now 11-17 on the season.

GAME ONE:

In the first inning, SUNY Poly wasted no time jumping on Elmira pitching. After Skylar Unebasami singled to open the frame, Hill launched a two-run homer to left-center, putting the Wildcats up early. A combination of walks, a hit-by-pitch, and two costly errors by Elmira's defense allowed SUNY Poly to plate four more runs in the inning. Brody Liddy and Derek Menechino each collected RBIs in the rally, and the Wildcats took a commanding 6–0 lead.

The Wildcats tacked on another run in the second after Hill singled, stole both second and third, and came home on a passed ball. Flaherty also singled in the inning but was left stranded. SUNY Poly extended the lead to 7–0.

After a quiet bottom of the third for SUNY Poly, the defense held strong behind more sharp pitching, stranding an Elmira baserunner who had doubled with two outs.

In the fourth, SUNY Poly made it 8–0 thanks to Hill's third hit of the game and an RBI single from Ryan Pelton. Hill scored his third run of the contest in as many innings.

The fifth inning saw Liddy spark another scoring opportunity with a triple to right-center and was brought home by Menechino's single to center, pushing the Wildcats ahead 9–0.

The Wildcats blew the game wide open in the sixth with a massive seven-run frame. Daniel Flaherty delivered a two-run single, followed by an RBI double from Colin Williams, and Liddy added another RBI hit. An RBI groundout from Chris Baker and a sac fly by Unebasami continued the onslaught. SUNY Poly capitalized on another Elmira error and a walk to score additional runs, bringing the total to 16–0.

Elmira went quietly in the top of the seventh, as SUNY Poly sealed the dominant shutout with three quick outs, including two flyouts to center.

GAME TWO:

Elmira got on the board early in the first inning with an RBI single. In the second, the Soaring Eagles  led off with a solo home run before a series of singles and a sacrifice fly pushed the lead to 3–0.

The Wildcats got one run back in the third after Derek Menechino reached on an error and eventually came around to score on a groundout by Hill, cutting the deficit to 3–1.

Elmira added three more runs in the fifth, all unearned, capitalizing on back-to-back infield errors by SUNY Poly. A double capped the inning, making it 6–1. In the bottom half, SUNY Poly answered. Menechino doubled and later scored on a throwing error. The Wildcats added two more runs on a groundout and wild pitch to close the gap to 6–4.

In the sixth, Elmira stretched the lead to 8–4 on back-to-back doubles and a groundout RBI. They tacked on another in the seventh on a sacrifice fly to make it 9–4. A single in the eighth plated another run, bringing the score to 10–4.

Down to their final six outs, the Wildcats exploded for a five-run bottom of the ninth. Chris Martin started the rally with a double, and Liddy and Masaki Brey delivered key RBIs. After a two-run single from Brey tied the game at 10–10, the Wildcats were right back in it.

After a scoreless 10th inning from both sides, Elmira took advantage of a leadoff error in the 11th. Lees delivered the go-ahead RBI single to make it 11–10. SUNY Poly had one last chance in the bottom half but couldn't capitalize on an error that put the tying run on base. A strikeout and a flyout ended the Wildcats' comeback bid.
