MLAX: Wildcats Drop Home Contest to the Bears

Utica, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly men's lacrosse team fell to the SUNY Potsdam Bears by a score of 16-3. Kai Hew scored two of the three Wildcat goals, while Luke Taylor secured the third, which was also his 100th career point. The Wildcats are now 3-2 on the season and will look to bounce back against SUNY New Paltz on Match 26th.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The game began with a strong start for SUNY Potsdam, as Drew Rose opened the scoring with a goal at 13:34. This was followed by goals from Billy Kozloski and Tyler Gould, bringing the score to 3-0 in favor of the Bears. Despite the early deficit, SUNY Poly was not without their chances. Goalie Joseph VanZandt was strong in net, making several key saves to keep his team in the game. However, the Bears continued to press, and by the end of the quarter, they had built a 5-0 lead.

Potsdam added to their advantage in the second period with back-to-back goals from Drew Rose and Billy Kozloski, putting the Bears up 7-0. The Wildcats defense battled hard to keep their opponents at bay, with VanZandt making more stops. The Wildcat offense had a few bright moments, including a strong shot from Kai Hew that found the back of the net, putting SUNY Poly on the scoreboard at 3:12. Despite a solid effort by the Poly squad, SUNY Potsdam's relentless offense kept the pressure on, and the Bears led 10-1 at the half.

The Bears maintained their intensity in the third quarter, with Billy Kozloski adding two more goals to his tally, including one assisted by Owen Walsh. SUNY Poly, despite being down, continued to fight hard, with a notable goal from Kai Hew, his second of the game. The defensive effort from Poly was noticeable, as they worked to limit the Bears' scoring opportunities, but Potsdam's depth and execution were too much. The score stood at 12-2 heading into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter saw the Bears maintain control and close out a dominant victory. Ryan Hughes extended the lead to 14-2 with a goal at 9:45. Just 30 seconds later, Kyan Combs scored, pushing the lead further to 15-2. A bright spot for the Wildcats came towards the end of the quarter, when Luke Taylor scored with under three minutes to secure his 100th career point. The final score would be 16-3.
