New Haven, F.L. - The SUNY Poly softball team ended their trip to Florida on a high note, winning their first game of the day against Roger Williams University by a score of 5-0 and their second game of the day against the Mount Saint Mary College Knights by a score of 1-0 following a game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh inning from Shelbi Hagues.Â
GAME ONE VS ROGER WILLIAMS UNIVERSITY:
In the top of the first, the Wildcats jumped out to an early lead. Ava Faragon walked and advanced to third on a series of wild pitches and passed balls. After a sacrifice fly by Annabella Mondello scored Faragon, SUNY Poly was up 1-0. Roger Williams couldn't get much going in the bottom of the first, with the only base runner coming via a walk, who was later stranded on second.
The Wildcats' offense came alive again in the top of the second. Kelly Powell and Trinity Critelli both walked, and a successful bunt by Taylor Hunter moved them into scoring position. Suny Poly capitalized as Shelbi Hagues blasted a two-RBI single to left center, scoring Powell and Critelli, pushing the Wildcats to a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, Roger Williams threatened with a walk and a double, but a strong defensive effort by the Wildcats, including a popup to the pitcher, ended the inning without any runs crossing the plate.Â
SUNY Poly added another run in the top of the fourth. After a leadoff error and a pair of walks, Mondello grounded out to the pitcher, scoring Leah Larsen from third, making the score 4-0.Â
The Hawks' struggles continued into the bottom of the fourth as they were unable to capitalize on a one out walk, leaving two runners stranded in scoring position.
In the top of the sixth, SUNY Poly struck again. Kimberly Birmingham singled, and Mondello followed with a base hit of her own. A sharp single by Alivia Turk brought in Birmingham for the fifth and final run of the game. Although Roger Williams had a few base runners late, they couldn't find a way to get on the scoreboard.
The Wildcats' defense stood strong in the final two innings, and after a quick 1-2-3 finish in the bottom of the seventh, SUNY Poly sealed the 5-0 victory.
GAME TWO VS MT.ST. MARY (NY):
The game was off to a quiet start as both teams struggled to find offense. Mt. St. Mary went down in order in the top of the first, with the Wildcats unable to capitalize in the bottom half of the inning. The only base runner for SUNY Poly came via a single by Kimberly Birmingham, but she was left stranded.
The second inning saw another scoreless frame for both teams. Mt. St. Mary had a chance to get on base with a walk from Amanda Corrente, but three strikeouts from pitcher Annabella Mondello closed the door on the Hawks. In the bottom half, the Wildcats went down quietly.Â
The game stayed scoreless through the third inning as well, with Mt. St. Mary's offense failing to get anything going. SUNY Poly had a few opportunities, including a single by Shelbi Hagues, but couldn't bring anyone around to score, leaving two runners stranded.
