WVB: Wildcats Show Fight, But Fall to Golden Eagles in Three Sets

Utica, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly women's volleyball team came up short on Saturday afternoon, falling in straight sets to the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles, 25–8, 25–20, and 25–19. With the loss, SUNY Poly drops to 6–14 overall and 0–7 in Empire 8 play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

SUNY Poly struck first in set one behind a quick kill from Kassity Cruz off a clean set by Daniella Aluisio. The teams traded early blows, with Kylee DeCarr and Abby Newell contributing offensively for the Wildcats. However, after a 2–2 tie, Brockport went on a dominant 12–0 run fueled by service aces from Gianna Felipe and a string of Poly errors.

Despite brief stops in the momentum, highlighted by a service ace from Catherine McCourt and back-to-back kills by Aluisio, SUNY Poly couldn't slow the Golden Eagles' attack. Alexis Sison and Luba Butcher led the charge for Brockport, combining for multiple kills during a 13–2 burst. A final service ace sealed the first set for the Golden Eagles, 25–8.

SUNY Poly rebounded with resilience in the second frame, jumping out to a 5–1 lead thanks to strong play at the net from Erica Mumbulo and Avery Droszd. Jade Taylor became a spark offensively for the Wildcats, notching five kills in the set, and DeCarr chipped in with a pair of timely service aces. Brockport responded with a late push, using kills from Butcher and Ellie Cusmano to pull ahead. Despite kills from Mumbulo and another ace from Teagan Hopkins, the Wildcats couldn't overcome the final Brockport surge, falling 25–20 in a hard-fought second set.

Set three saw SUNY Poly show flashes of rhythm, with Grace Southwick's tough serving and strong setting leading the way. Taylor and Mumbulo connected for several key plays, while McCourt added a service ace to pull Poly within striking distance midway through the set.The Golden Eagles built an early 4–0 lead, but SUNY Poly kept chipping away, eventually narrowing the gap. However, Brockport answered again, this time behind kills from Cusmano and Parella, extending the lead to 24–17. Though Poly fought off a pair of match points, the Golden Eagles closed it out 25–19 to secure the sweep.
