Rochester, N.Y. - The SUNY Poly men's volleyball team was defeated by the Nazareth Golden Flyers in a five-set thriller. Adam Brawn, Corey Hollingsworth, and Peter Gottler all posted double-digit kills, but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats fell 3-2. The Wildcats now sit at 4-5 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The first set was a back-and-forth battle, with Elmira taking an early lead thanks to a kill from Jordan Peiser and a service ace from Luke Jata, making it 2-0. The Wildcats quickly responded, as Corey Hollingsworth and Adam Brawn each registered kills to level the score at 3-3.
The teams traded points throughout, with Elmira's Peiser and Dylan Vargas leading the offense, while Brawn and Gottler kept SUNY Poly competitive with timely kills. Despite some errors from both sides, including attack and service mistakes, the Wildcats closed out the set 27-25 with a key kill from Gottler.
Set two saw both teams continue to exchange points, with Peiser and Jata putting up strong offensive performances for Elmira, while Brawn and Hollingsworth kept pace for Poly. After several lead changes, Elmira pulled ahead, capitalizing on multiple Wildcat attack errors to close out the set 25-16.
In the third set, SUNY Poly started with an early service error, giving Elmira the first point. Elmira quickly gained momentum, with Luke Jata contributing big kills. SUNY Poly fought back with some strong plays from Gottler, eventually gaining control and building a 17-12. The Wildcats continued to capitalize on Elmira's mistakes, including a few attack errors and service errors. The Wildcats sealed the set 25-21 after a final kill by Brawn.Â
The fourth set started with Elmira and SUNY Poly exchanging points early on. Wildcat Corey Hollingsworth provided several key kills, while Elmira responded with strong plays from Peiser, Jata, and Cohen. Both teams struggled with service errors and attack mistakes, which kept the set close. Midway through the set, SUNY Poly gained a commanding 18-14 lead thanks to some critical kills. The Wildcats fought back, but they couldn't stop the Soaring Eagles momentum, as Jata and Peiser kept the pressure on. Elmira would seal a 25-18 win.Â
The fifth set kicked off with Elmira taking an early lead. Despite the mistakes by the Wildcats, they stayed competitive throughout the set. Ultimately, Wildcat errors, including some missed serves, gave Elmira the edge. The set ended with the Soaring Eagles taking the win, 15-10, sealing the match victory in five sets.
