Women's Basketball Remains atop NEAC with Victory over Morrisville

MORRISVILLE, NY

– The SUNYIT women's basketball team had 11 different players score at least two points and cruised past NEAC rival Morrisville State 69-42 Saturday to remain tied with Gallaudet University for first place in the conference at 5-0.  The win also improved the Lady Wildcats to 6-1 overall, while Morrisville fell to 2-4 in the NEAC and 2-6 overall.

In what has been the theme of their season thus far, the Lady Wildcats used strong defensive play to pick up the win, holding Morrisville to 24 percent shooting from the field on the day, including 15 percent in the second half.  SUNYIT also forced 21 turnovers while committing just seven of their own and recorded 11 steals and seven blocks in the contest.

After both teams were tied at 26 after one half of play, SUNYIT opened the second half with a 15-2 run in the first five minutes of action and never looked back.  The Wildcats held Morrisville to just 12 more points the rest of the way and built their lead to as much as 30 points en route to the 27-point victory.

Sophomore Lyndsey Brognano (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) poured in a game-high 18 points in just 17 minutes of action, while senior Taylor Topping (Bronx, NY/Preston) posted a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.  Junior Kwanisha Jones (San Antonio, TX/Indian River) dished out a game-high seven assists, while fellow classmate Sarah Couvillon (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) swatted a team-high three shots.

Nijee Scott scored 16 points for Morrisville, while Nijah Townsend scored 14 points and grabbed a game-high 21 rebounds.

The Wildcats will be back in action after the holidays when they travel to take on NEAC rival Wilson College on Wednesday, January 5.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
